There are a thousand ways to spend an interesting day in Amsterdam. This is just one.
Not a lot of pictures because I don't want to be a travel guide, providing all the information so you won't get lost/so you won't explore & discover for yourself & have fun. Also, not a lot of pictures because I am a lazy ass.
Athenaeum Bookshop + Newscentre (Spui 14-16)
One of the last big 100% independent bookshops left in Amsterdam, located in the city's heart. The Athenaeum Newscentre offers foreign and local newspapers and magazines plus a selection of travel guides and books on design, jazz and pop music. I once spent over 50 euros on magazines there.

Recycled Fixed (Spuistraat 84A)
Secondhand bicycle shop with a special fixed gear department. The owner will make a custom single speed bike for you while his dog watches. Once you realized the shadowy ppl at the Wallen won't stop selling you their detergent as coke until you dump that rented tourist bike, go here at once.

The NDSM dockyard (somewhere @ Riemsdijkweg; seek & thou shall find)
A historic dockyard turned a creative place where people produce out of the box, unique ideas with a twist. Eat, drink, party, wander in the industrial looking mini-city close to the water and feel the energy in the air.
EYE Film Institute (IJpromenade 1)
More than a cinema. They host a Stanley Kubrick exhibition right now, plus the whole month a retrospective of Simone Signoret and Yves Montand, the two stars of French film. All settled in a clean, wide space.

Leidseplein
Around the Leidseplein,
Leidse square, are countless of the city's finest music venues and clubs located: let's say Paradiso, Melkweg, Jimmy Woo. The perfect place to grab a nocturnal drink with friends (or let tourists treat you on one) and then go dancing in the Chicago Social Club, Sugar Factory etc.
Exchange Hotel + Stock Restaurant + Options Shop (Damrak 49 & 50)
This hotel, restaurant & mini department store make a great concept together. The restaurant Stock serves breakfast all day, from 7.00AM. In collaboration with fashion institute AMFI, the Exchange hotel has 61 unique rooms decorated by students of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute with beautiful views. And the Options shop stocks an extensive range, from design gifts, stationery, ceramics, furniture, clothing and magazines to bespoke products from upcoming and established international interior and fashion designers from all over the world.
